You have just received the good news that your insurance may be eligible to cover the cost of your wig. Before you begin shopping for your dream wig, there are a few pieces of information that need to be confirmed and approved by your insurance company before you can move forward.
First, when speaking with your insurance provider, do not use the term "wig." Instead use the medical term, "cranial hair prosthesis." Medical providers consider wigs as a cosmetic item, which is usually not covered.
Now that we have the proper terminology, we can prepare to call the insurance benefits department. The purpose is to find out if your policy covers a cranial hair prosthesis. If it does, what type of cranial hair prosthesis is covered such as human hair wigs, synthetic wigs, or any type of wig up to a certain amount.
If you have access to your insurance benefits plan online, you can go the DME durable medical equipment coverage section to find out if it is part of your plan. if you don’t see cranial prosthesis listed, it doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have coverage.
Next steps, have your insurance card available when calling your health insurance company and get a written pre-authorization.
Here are the questions we have outlined to ask your insurance provider:
- Do you cover the cost of a cranial hair prosthesis?
- How much of the cost is covered?
- If yes, to the above questions, ask for a preauthorization in writing.
- What information is required on the wig prescription?
- Is there required documentation that needs to be submitted?
- Can I find my own cranial prosthesis supplier?
- What does the medical wig supplier need to do to provide?
